Process Technology Setup and Design Rule Check

Tanner EDA has developed an extensive library of Process Technology Setup files for most major semiconductor manufacturers. These files are for use with Tanner Tools Pro, and are compatible with the geometric and electrical design rules and guidelines that are specified in the technology manual provided by the process vendor. As a result, end-users can easily and effortlessly customize Tanner Tools Pro to their chosen process technology environment.

Several tasks have to be performed in order to complete a single process technology setup. At the mask-level, these include layout grid definitions, drawn and generated layers, wire widths and place-and-route parameters. A cross section definition file allows users to easily view a 2-D simulated cutaway of their design with variable etch display. Similarly, an extract definition file facilitates generation of an accurate SPICE netlist, composed of typical devices like transistors, capacitors and resistors, including device parameters and parasitic capacitors. This is based on the geometric and electric properties that are included in the layer definitions. An Extract Test Suite is provided to demonstrate this capability.

Equally important are the Design Rule Checks (DRC) that are programmed in the setup files. These cover all vendor required geometric rules and some electric rules that are currently supported by Tanner Tools. A DRC Test Suite is also provided which contains rule illustrations, marginal rule violations providing proof of operation and violation counts predicting error label locations. Documentation is provided to confirm all the layer properties, design rules and other relevant information.

Optionally, circuit-level tasks can be performed as well. These can include basic layout elements and schematic symbols, circuit simulation models and interface requirements to other Tanner Tools. A Simulation Test Suite can demonstrate these features.
